Fuel Your Better with Vega Sport

As a mom, wife, full-time college professor, and part-time fitness instructor, I sometimes find myself running a little low on energy and still having to either take or teach a workout class. These are times when I could really use a little pick me up before heading to the gym. So, I was pleased to receive samples of Vega Sport Sugar-free Energizer as part of their Fuel Your Better campaign.

This isn’t my first experience with Vega Sport. See, every now and then, I decide I’m a vegetarian. During my last vegetarian period, I found Vega Sport because I was looking for an all-natural plant-based pre-workout supplement. At that time, I tried the regular (not sugar-free) Pre-workout Energizer and Recovery Protein. Vega Sport was hard to find in my area, though, and when I gave up being vegetarian after about 8 months (don’t judge me), I stopped using it. But, I was quite fond of the product and so I was excited to try the Sugar-free Energizer.

…Mix it

I have taken many different pre-workout drinks in the past and they NEVER taste good. So, I honestly didn’t expect Vega Sport Sugar-Free Energizer to taste like a cup full of fruity deliciousness. Good thing, too, because I would have been sorely disappointed. However, mixing it with orange juice or into a smoothie masked the taste. I don’t like doing this, though, because it adds sugar and calories. Fortunately, I discovered that the best way to prepare the drink is to…

…Shake it

And I mean, shake it. Like a Polaroid picture.  During my first few tries, no matter how much stirring I did, the texture never evened out. But, once I stole…ahem, borrowed…my daughter’s little squeeze bottle, it made a world of difference! I put in liquid, added Vega Sport and shook, shook, shook. Strangely enough, shaking seemed to improve the taste as well. Now, don’t get me wrong; it didn’t start to taste like a yummy milkshake or super yummy martini or anything, but it was easily tolerable. So tolerable that I went back to drinking it with just plain water with no gag reflex. :) Proceed with caution if you try this at home, but honestly, as long as it’s well-shaken, I’m perfectly happy with the taste just mixed with either plain water or coconut water.

Go ahead and start working out within the suggested timeframe. I’ve taken other pre-workouts in the past that give you that tingly, flushing feeling and most people take that as a sign that it’s kicking in. You won’t feel such a tell-tale symptom from Vega Sport Sugar-Free Energizer. That’s actually one of the main reasons I like it so much. I HATE that flushing feeling! Ohhh, I hate it so! And I can laugh about it now, but the first time I felt the flush, I really was one second away from dialing 911.

Ugh. Thank you Vega Sport for keeping things gentle and natural. Instead of flushing, I felt like I was waking up and eager to start my workout.

Alright, now taste considerations aside, the next concern is performance. I was honestly a bit concerned by the instructions indicating use for “low intensity or short duration (<1 hour) exercise.” Well, what exactly is low intensity? I don’t typically need a pre-workout energizer for low intensity workouts; I need it for high intensity workouts! So, to test the limits, I used the pre-workout energizer for several different workouts: high intensity cardio, high intensity intervals cardio + strength, and strength only. All workouts were less than one hour, because well, I rarely workout for more than one hour. *shrug*

High intensity intervals cardio + strength – This was my first test. As I mentioned earlier, I’m a fitness instructor and sometimes I just don’t feel like dragging myself to class and teaching. Today was one of those days. I didn’t want to move off the couch; forget motivating a room full of people.

20 minutes after taking Vega Sport, I greeted my class with a big smile and “get ready” warning. 60 minutes later, my members left class drenched and mad at me (in a good way). I still had energy after class, but I could feel it dwindling down and I had no problem sleeping later. So, I’m guessing the effects start to wear off after an hour, hence the note in the product instructions.

Pretty much the same for my strength and cardio tests. This time, I worked out myself. In both cases, I had to drag myself to the gym. I pretty much always drag myself to the gym. Eh. Anyway, Vega Sport gave me just enough pep to get moving. I can’t say I noticed a measurable difference in performance. The big impact seems to be just getting motivated to start the workout and feeling energized throughout. That’s good enough for me and I look forward to using Vega Sport Sugar-Free Energizer in my future workouts.
